It sounds to me like a folded-down-from-stereo mono. The stereo panning becomes (to my ears) volume panning and it loses a bit of its impact. Occasionally like on track B3 the mono 'flattening' helps to make Jimi sound like he's playing in a real band, rather than playing over and above and in front of and behind everyone else. Overall I'd say it just can't compete with the stereo version - it's one of the best stereo records ever made after all. I'd obviously be interested in any more information you might have about it.
