Discussion about People Like Us - Lowest Common Dominator
Pumpit
This is an album of montages - the cover with its mixing of religious imagery with goats (hmmm...). And many of the tracks themselves plagiarise and plunder with a certain humour - Track 3, for instance starts off like that early MUTE RECS single "Judy In Disguise" with a Greek folk punctuation. Track 4 steals what I assume is part of a SMITH & JONES comedy sketch blended with various other found songs and spoken voice things. But the true gems of this album are the pieces they have themselves constructed from various sound sources - track 6 - again with a certain ART OF NOISE sense of silly noise humour - track 2 with it's mechanical rhythm and working man's club organ sound. The biggest work on this album comprises three tracks blended one into another - the sprawling and metamorphic track 8 with it's humming, buzzing, phasing soporific pace, which in turn blends into the almost NIN-filler spread of track 9, and 10 with it's found location recordings and snatches of strings, harps and subtle guitar. Some of the original pieces here remind me of the musical interludes found on MAX GOLDT albums, although theirs is a much more muscular and busy sound. An uneven and eccentric album, but hey, it works.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
