One of my childhood albums that still has an affect on me 45 years later (yep ... guilty pleasure) Almost every song here stands out on its own. As an adult I can't help but feel that these songs were far too sophisticated for a children's movie (a movie which hasn't held out as much as the music has)...and that being said, Rex Harrison wasn't a singer, and I still hear Anthony Newley's singing as a bit over the top and "too broadway" for my ears, never really giving the songs much melodic justice. THIS Disney recording, however, rectify's all of that. Adult-contemporary arrangements aside, 50 years after this movie was released, I have yet to hear anything better done to these songs (Diana Krall's rendition of When I Look In Your Eyes a major exception).Incidentally, 2 great love songs, Something in Your Smile and Where Are the Words, were cut from the film but recorded for the soundtrack, so they're here as well.TRIVIA for BEATLES FANS: The vocals here are by the Mike Sammes Singers, a London based studio vocal group who worked with Disney for several years, and are featured on several UK pop hits and radio jingles.....but....do the words "oompah, oompah, stick it up your jumper" and "got one got one everybody's got one" sound familiar? Yep, that's them on I Am the Walrus. They are also the angelic choir on Good Night and I think they did the choir parts on Long & Winding Road with Phil Spector.
